What Does “Eat, Pray, Love” Have to do With Goal Setting?

Goal Achievement: Choose Your Thoughts as Carefully as You Choose Your Clothes Each Day

Over the weekend, I went to see Eat, Pray, Love starring Julia Roberts. The movie was terrific and contains a considerable number of life lessons. In fact, I plan to add it to my Netflix list so I can watch it again when it comes out on DVD.

When Liz, the main character, spends time at an ashram in India, she becomes friends with Richard who is spending time at the ashram to sort out his life and forgive himself. Richard was forever sharing little bits of wisdom with Liz.  At one point he said “Choose your thoughts as carefully as you choose your clothes each day.”

It’s a great piece of advice, though I’d suggest we need to choose our thoughts even more carefully than we choose our clothes. One small secret to goal setting and goal achievement is to watch your thoughts: what you think determines the actions you take, and the actions you take determine the results you get.

If you’re not getting the results you want and need, if you’re not making progress on your goals, check your thoughts. Do you have an inner voice that’s sabotaging you? Do negative thoughts keep showing up?  The first step in eliminating those negative thoughts is to become aware of them. Often, just recognizing the negative voices in your head is enough to change them. If you have a negative thought that constantly surfaces and just won’t seem to go away, it will take more work to turn it around, but it can be done.

Here’s the bottom line, to achieve your goals, keep a check on your thoughts. Positive thoughts will go a long way toward goal achievement.

I love this advise Valerie, “If you’re not getting the results you want and need, if you’re not making progress on your goals, check your thoughts.” Create a new vision, one goal, one dream at a time sounds like a joyful plan to me.

      Hi Mary Margaret,

I’m all about taking action. Without immense action, we will never achieve our goals. That said, we need to combine the right attitude (thoughts) with the action. So it’s a combination of the right action and the right thoughts that will help us achieve our goals.

      Thanks again for commenting.

Great advice here about using positive thoughts to achieve specific goals that you’ve set. And I personally think it goes beyond that to having overall positive thoughts to create a happy and successful life for yourself, in all areas of your life….business, personal, whatever. The fastest way to invite misery and failure is to focus on it. And by contract, the fastest way to attain happiness and success is to focus only on that.

I have been working on this idea for months with few results I read and studied the book the secret. I have been practicing  afermations . I am reading and studing another book now on using the power of the mind to achive goals . So far the only thing I have learned is that I am a slow thinker as in not one you would consider fast or thinking on his feet .
I have had great success in sleeping on my problems and getting the results in the morning. I have had some unexpected results asking for problems to be solved for me and they have been with scarry results. I have been really careful what the heck I ask for  now. So far no real harm done. It may be just chance but to have it happen more than three times in a row is not chance. Not to me.
I am trying to earn enough online to help me retire and it is going rather slowso far but I now have had measurable results and getting steady sales now.
So far I have not had much luck setting goals I think because it has been a lot more than expected to learn what I needed to know I would sure apreciate help and advice . I looked and could not find much online on improving my negative thinking . I feel if I could get past that even a small amount I could be very successful. If i could join a group or get great advice I would listen for sure . I have a goal board above my desk  I guess I truthly need to update that board the sun has bleached all my goals off the cards I wrote on is that a bad omen  LOL . I am not superstitious and can not even spell it .
