It’s All in the Attitude

The right attitude isn’t everything; it can’t stand alone to make a business successful, but without it your dreams won’t come true. If your dreams allude you, the problem is probably on the inside, in the form of your mindset or attitude. Mindset is the first part of a simple three-part equation:

Attitude + Action = Results

In other words, our mindset or attitude (the way we think) determines the actions we take and the actions we take determine our results. Observe successful people you know and you’ll find they naturally have their thinking aligned with what they want to achieve. They focus on what they want, not on what they don’t want. They have the right mindset.

The right attitude is getting lots of play these days, but knowledge of it has been around for years. The first individual to bring it to light was Norman Vincent Peale. Back in 1952 when he published The Power of Positive Thinking, Peale came under heavy criticism. However, his book was on the best-seller list for 186 weeks; it’s a classic, having sold around 5 million copies.  Thirty years later, Louise Hay, who believes every thought we think is creating our future,  introduced us to this concept along with the power of positive affirmations in her book, You Can Heal Your Life. Lynn Grabhorn was a student of the way in which our thoughts format our lives and she taught us about the right attitude in her best-seller, Excuse Me Your Life is Waiting. Then there’s Abraham-Hicks and their many CDs and books on the Law of Attraction. More recently, the DVD, The Secret, brought the idea of the right mindset (aka the Law of Attraction) into the mainstream.

Do you have the right attitude? Are you a positive thinker? One way to find out is to become your own self coach. Become a diligent observer of yourself. Do an attitude check often throughout the day. What do you notice about your attitude? What messages are you sending yourself? If you don’t have the right mindset, flick that bad attitude and replace it with a positive one and little by little, your dreams will start to come true.

Are You Waiting for a Bailout?

Yesterday I went to Staples to ship an item UPS. (There’s no surcharge when you ship UPS from Staples.) Kelly, the customer service person, mentioned that the box was quite heavy and  I told her I had sold the item on eBay. She asked if I sell a lot of things on eBay. I replied that  I sell my own belongings that are no longer useful to me, but I have a friend (I’ll call her Monica) who has created an eBay business. Kelly was so blown away by Monica’s story that I want to share it with you.

I’ve known Monica for more than 25 years. She’s always been in sales and about 10 years ago decided to get into real estate so she’d have more flexibility and more time to spend with her kids. In November of ’06 when real estate sales had been down for a few months, Monica decided to be proactive and do something to supplement her income. A real collector and pack-rat, Monica started cleaning out her house from attic to basement and listing on eBay everything she no longer used. When she saw the potential, Monica expanded beyond her own belongings and today is an eBay Power Seller having sold nearly 3,000 items. Last year she earned nearly $30,000!

That Monica did this has never been surprising to me. But Kelly was blown away: she kept exclaiming “This is awesome! Monica is what America is about! She didn’t sit around complaining and she didn’t expect anyone to bail her out!”

So what about you? If you’re an entrepreneur whose business is down, are you sitting around buying into the recession? Are you waiting for a bailout?  Or have you taken the bull by the horns and decided – like Monica – to make lemonade out of lemons?
