What are SMART goals? What does the SMART goals acronym mean? Is it really necessary to have SMART goals?
A few months ago, I published my first book, Burn Your Wish List! How to Stop Hoping for the Best and Start Planning for Success. It’s a downloadable eBook and it’s all about goal setting and how to achieve goals. As I was conducting research for the book, I desperately wanted to come up with my own brilliant acronym as a guide to creating a great goal.
As it turns out, the acronym S.M.A.R.T., which outlines a set of criteria your goals should follow, covers it all. While there are a number of variations as to the meaning of SMART goal setting, here’s what’s most common:
Your goal must:
| Specific | be a clear and precise statement. Avoid ambiguity. |
| Measurable | be quantifiable. (i.e. How will you know when you have accomplished your goal? |
| Attainable | be within reach; there should be a high probability you will attain your goal. |
| Relevant | have meaning and significance to you. |
| Time-bound | have a deadline. |
Take a look at your top ten list of annual goals for 2010. If they don’t adhere to the S.M.A.R.T. goals criteria, it’s not to late to rewrite them.
